Understanding Mold

The general population do not always completely understand what mold could mean and it often goes untreated in effective ways. Here is some general information from the experts here at DRS!

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants that can cause serious health problems, especially for children and the elderly.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Confusion about mold is understandable.  Here are a few of the questions that we commonly get asked.

As of right now, mold tests or measurements are not reliable enough to base decision on.  With over 10,000 various molds, the correct and timely treatment is the top priority.

Removing moldy materials from a property is going to naturally, increase the mold levels in the air.  With that understanding, unprotected individuals should minimize or completely avoid exposure when possible.

In large or particularly dangerous treatments, using tents and negatively pressure containment areas might be required.  In these cases the occupants need to vacate the property until the process is complete.

Painting over mold, even after applying a biocide, will not fix mold and dampness problems.  If you do not address the problem now, you are going to have a larger problem down the road.

Other ineffective “quick fixes” include removing damaged materials, but not addressing the underlying moisture problem, running particle-removing air filters or air cleaners, or Febreze the odor away.  These can allow the mold to grow or resurface and continue to risk health issues with the people that come in contact with it and damage the property.
